The process of creating the art for the children’s book Silent Swoop: An Owl, An Egg, And a Warm Shirt Pocket. This true story of a rescued Great Horned owl is shown in stages of from underdrawings to final watercolor and pastel illustrations of this special owl from egg to owlet to full grown owl.

work in progress – underdrawing technique
Drawing is the basis of all my work. In the old master’s tradition of underpainting, with my own twist, underdrawings are created. With this in place painting is done using transparent washes to create a soft realistic glow. Here you can see the before and after of this technique.
